Swimming With the Whale Sharks and Visiting Oslob
After a day of rest and catching up on laundry, we headed south to Oslob for an early-morning adventure. Our tour guide picked us up at 4:00 AM so we could make the three-hour drive in time to swim with the whale sharks. We had already done this shortly after arriving in Cebu, but the Hardings hadn’t been there yet, and it was something Jill especially wanted to experience. This time, we decided to splurge and rent a GoPro so we could capture videos of the encounter.
The setup was fascinating. After a short briefing, we were given life jackets and loaded into small boats that rowed us just a short distance from shore. Once out on the water, we were allowed to remove our life jackets if we wanted to dive beneath the surface—but even without them, the salt content made it surprisingly difficult to submerge.
A small outrigger circled nearby, dropping krill into the water to guide the whale sharks right in front of the swimmers. For about 20–30 minutes, we floated and swam as these gentle giants glided gracefully around us. It was more than enough time to take videos of each of us—both individually and together.
The first time I did this, I’ll admit I was nervous. But the experience is very controlled, with clear rules and restrictions to keep both the people and the whale sharks safe. This time, I could simply enjoy the wonder of being so close to such incredible creatures.
Not bad for a bunch of Senior citizens!
